Her abduction lets her escape an unhappy future, but a surprise reunion drags her back to her past.
England, 1612. For Margaret, Lady Sherman, widowhood is a crisis. The inheritance set aside to support her might be enough to escape the stifling role of wife—unless her stepson snatches it back by marrying her himself. His dangerous obsession puts Margaret at the mercy of a charming pirate captain. Desperate for a new start, she makes a reckless decision to join his crew as their purser.
As Margaret tallies piles of plunder, she relishes her newfound sense of empowerment. But when a figure from her past resurfaces, Margaret must guard her most precious treasures: her hard-won freedom… and her heart.
Rooted is a slow-burn, open-door historical romance that’s perfect for those who love Philippa Gregory novels or the Showtime TV series The Tudors.

Explore the music of Rooted
I’ve curated a playlist of tunes that appear in the book, or that I hope will better immerse you in the Renaissance. You’ll also learn a thing or two about early modern music!

Emma Golding writes romantic historical fiction and fantasy as a healthy outlet for her obsession with sexy banter and swoony grand gestures.
After receiving her B.A. in English Literature, she promptly switched gears and pursued a graduate degree in music. She kept writing, though, prioritizing noveling whenever she could.
Emma loves history, Irish folk tunes, Jane Austen film adaptations, and her piano students. She lives in Chicagoland with her pets and her spouse in her very own Happily Ever After.
